Hi, Folk keep talking to me about bonk rations - what have you got included in yours?

An energy gel or two is one option, but I'm not a fan of that 100% sugary stuff. You can't do a long Audax on gels/energy-drink alone as you'll just end up with the trots.

I prefer something that has a mix of high GI foods (i.e. sugary stuff) and low GI foods (cereals/oats). Chocolate covered flapjack is pretty much perfect, that and chocolate covered rice crispies or the chocolate covered hob-nob bars that you can find in the shops. The sugar gives you an instant kick whilst your body starts working on the the slow burn oats/cereals to stop you blowing up shortly after using up the energy from the sugar.

However, it's much better to just avoid the bonk completely by making sure you eat small amounts regularly. Learning to pick at something savoury whilst riding saves you a huge amount of time in the long run.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
We went across France on toasted corn, Bombay mix, Japanese rice crackers and dates - a good mixture of slow-release carbs and protein, with the dates providing a quick hit of energy if required. One of the hotels I sometimes stay in for work leaves mini-bags of minty gummy bears on the pillow, and those sit in my bar bag on the solo bike if I need them.

Banana plus cereal bar, jelly babies too on longer rides to get me the last few miles, if needed. If not needed, I eat them anyway.

Jordan's Frusli bars are my favorite....I take a few, as well as Jelly Babies. I keep one bar as my "bonk ration" and usually scoff the rest.

I use GORP - Good old raisins and peanuts - mixed together in a small resealable bag and stuffed in your back pocket for easy access or MMGORP, my favourite - Chocolate M&Ms mixed together with peanuts and raisins

Flapjack fingers - The individually wrapped ones (Asda in perth are selling the 'fabulous bakin brothers' 2 for £2 at the moment). a few of them in my back pocket along with an energy gel or two and some home made energy drink. On sportives, the flapjack fingers with the tops cut off the packaging make for easily access mess free snacks on the go.

I suppose only the gels are bonk rations as I'll be eating and drinking the other stuff whatever. The gels are a supplement to be used as and when I feel I need them.

I generally use energy gels, but have seem some food for thought here. I carry food on me though and as appealing as chocolate flapjacks sounds, not sure how i'll be able to carry one without it melting horribly!!

A good food I find for snacking on during a ride is a good old fig roll!!!
