Can't say anything for the bike, but the general consensus around here is that if you buy any bike from Halfords, take it to a proper bike shop to be checked over before riding.

which one, road bike, hybrid or MTB? They do several around the 999.99 mark

Customer service from Halfords appears to be inconsistent and variable

go for the next model down.

You're talking about the Boardman Team Carbon yea? £999.

I looked at this the other day with my brother. the next model down is the Boardman Team and is an aluminium frame with carbon forks for about £649 i think.

For your extra £350 you are getting a carbon frame instead of aluminium frame/carbon forks, but the only real gain is 0.5lb difference in weight. he won't feel the difference in weight and the groupset (gears etc) and Ritchey components are the same on both bikes and any other differences are negligible.

it really depends on if he's dead set on carbon, but if he's not and he just wants a light bike, then the aluminium frame with carbon forks (Boardman Team) is much better value for money. Personally, if it was me, i wouldn't stump up an extra £350 for 0.5lb less weight.

As for the groupset. It's the SRAM equivalent to Shimano Ultegra.

My mate has the same bike last year when it had Shimano Ultegra on it. He loves it. This year they have put SRAM on it, which everyone is craving about.

So to sum up... both the Team and Team Carbon bike have the same equipment but the Team bike with the aluminium frame is only 0.5lb heavier and much cheaper. So if he has his heart set on Carbon then buy the Team Carbon bike, but if he's not bothered about having Carbon then get the Team bike.

Even the Boardman Comp bike (the £500 quid model) is good value for money with Shimano 105 groupset on it. But all the Boardman bikes have a good groupset on them for the money, so if he has his heart set on the carbon then he will still be getting good value for money and a nice bike.

As said, get the set up checked at your local bike shop after as Halfords are a bit crap at putting them together.

hope this helps.

ps... Cycle Plus magazine rated them 10/10

pps... I am considering getting a Boardman Team (not the carbon one) when the bike to work scheme comes out again at work.

Just to nit-pick, the Team is the Alu version with carbon forks and costs £799.00. Like Buggi said, £200 difference to save 0.5lb, (yes I know it's not carbon....) The equipment levels are pretty good.

The Comp is £650.00, and is a 9spd compact double, with 105/Tiagra. It weighs a porky 19lbs:rolleyes:............... Mr Boardman is on record as saying it's a better specc'd bike than the one he won TDF on!

Having said that, I've gone for a Hybrid Pro. (I want to ride all year round and do a bit of touring) which is basically a flat-barred road bike with Avid Elixir discs. I have done a bit of testing, and discovered that the mechanics at my local Halfords are not far off, and anyway I am probably competent enough to check the bike over myself before I ride it.

I would, only according to the stock checker on their website, they don't have any of them in stock at Solihull?

Well, my LOC from Halfords has sat with me for 2 weeks.

I have attempted to order a Boardman Road Carbon, and have been told that stock won't be available until mid Sept. Thats a long wait.

Went to another Halfords fairly close to me, which stocks Boardmans, and having read the advice above, i have reserved the display Road bike which is £799. At least I can buy some goodies with the £200 saved.

I did want carbon, but I can see that 250 grammes is not going to make any difference to my run into work.
