Boardman wearing Assos on the highlights.

I was taken aback to see Chris Boardman wearing an Assos black jersey on the highlights programme tonight. I had been out and watched it late but paused and rewound to confirm it - I've been to his site and double checked and there isn't one I could have mistaken it for. Definitely the distinctive Assos markings on the shoulders.

kind of glad to see him in it as his yellow and grey road jersey is IMO very drab.

Anyone else see it?

Yes and what I also noticed was that he has had to cover the Boardman name on his bike - presumably because that would have constituted free advertising. You can still see the yellow insides on the fork legs and stays though.

I noticed it too, but it didn't shock me. He can wear what he chooses, subject to contracts.

Yup, and he's also wearing Assos Uno S5 bibs. A fine choice and I'm sure his bottom is thanking him. Notice the way that Assos is moving away from the flatlock seams so beloved of other manufacturers at the moment, and is going for the plain understated look. So very in for 2011 don'tcha know!

On a slightly related issue, it's always interesting to find out what ex pros use when they don't have to please sponsors. I remember reading that a lot of them choose to ride around on steel Colnagos once they've hung up their racing wheels. And Andy Hampsten - ex Tour rider - with his compact-cranked, fat-tyred, and comfy-wheeled titanium bike.

Interesting though I can't blame them after years of very stiff bikes and some of the roads they have to ride. I got a carbon for the first time this year but it's not as stiff as many and is quite comfy. They've got the fitness to get up hills required for a titanium - so much more sluggish than a carbon I found when I tried one and an expensive one at that last year. I need all the help I can get.

And then they go to the ad break immediately afterwards where you get Chris telling us how 'he's always wondered why there are 2nd and 3rd places on the podium.' Cheesy or what?!

Bring back the Lucozade ads with the coach who ended up mis-pronouncing "Big Cojones" as "Bingo Callers"! After hearing that gag repeated every ten minutes, I finally allowed myself to find it funny. It was either that or shoot myself.

Well I would be, I wouldn't have anything with his name on, kit or bikes!

Why not?! They look like pretty good value bikes to me. Fair play to the guy if he wants to trade on his racing past.

He's wearing Lake shoes as well if anyone was wanting to copy his whole wardrobe!

On twitter yesterday he said they were 'very comfy'

It's a pity you can only get Boardman bikes via Halfords, a couple of people I ride with have them and they seem pretty good. I mean you're not going to have much faith in your new bike being set up right when they can't even put the bottle cages on the right way up as was the case when a mate picked his up a couple of months ago.

Only certain mechanics at the Halfords stores are allowed to deal with the Boardman range. These guys tend to know what they're doing - I've certainly not had any problems with either of my two, or any of the 100+ halfords bikes bought through the C2W scheme I run - but acknowledge they've earned a ropey repurtation over the years.

Wiggle now sells Boardman bikes to Europe, however it's the same thing as getting them from Halfords. Just ask for it to be delivered flat packed from the factory and tighten the screws yourself.

The new top end range are sold through Echelon bike shop in Pershore.
