I decided to change to a 11-36 from a 11-32 for a little help up the hills. Got a "new other" from ebay and it seems quite kosher although the cogs got muddled in the post.

Nevermind, take the old one off and pay attention to the spacings... unfortunately it is different.

The old cassette has the largest three wheels fixed together and the smallest three all have 'built-in' spacers. The new one has the largest two fixed together and the smallest two have built in spacers.

There are two extra spacers in the new kit, BUT one of the new spacers has cut-outs so that it cannot turn on the spindle.

My guess is that this spacer is to replace the 'missing' spacer between 2nd and 3rd largest OR 2nd and 3rd smallest, but my question is: which one?

And as a supplementary: what is the point of having a spacer that does not turn when all the others do?

Most grateful for any help - the sooner the better as the bike's in bits and the weather's lovely :-)

Is it a road or mountain bike? What speed is the bike? What speed is the new cassette versus the o,d cassette?

Where in Surrey are you that you can't get up the hills on an 11-32? Even I can and I'm crap

The spacer that you refer to I'm thinking could be the one that sits against the hub flange on the inside of the cassette?

Vickster - It's 10 speed on both - Boardman team disk hybrid. i'm in Guildford on the N Downs - and i'm 64 next month ;-)
Simpleton - i'm afraid i don't understand what you are saying/asking.

I could really do with some help setting up the rear derailleur as well. (I've put the spacer in question between 2nd and 3rd smallest cogwheels for now.) I found a great youtube video, but it doesn't work at all for me and i'm in a right mess.

Yeah - i can get up most places, but it's a real struggle sometimes at the end of a longish stint. Looking forward to seeing how the compromise on the other gears feels - i'll hang on to the 11-32 for now in case...
After several attempts i seem to have the gears changing reasonably smoothly. I'm due a 6 week service soon so maybe the experts at Halfords can get it spot on for me. We'll see.
i guess the spacing solution i used is OK but i'd still really be interested if any expert mechanic here can shed any light?
