Can you not have both?

If its progression that you are after, I should think that the Boardman is the next step up, bike wise, than the Defy 2. If I could afford one, I would definitely consider one. However, I have been doing little upgrades to the Defy that have made a difference i.e. New Wheels etc.
ordered and keeping deft as well

What are your expectations with regards to the new bike and you being dropped by your riding companions? Do you think you will now be able to keep up?

If robbie wishes to spend his hard earned on a new steed, good luck to him.No doubt it will encourage him to put the extra effort in.

there is a difference, smoother ride and better gears, just a nicer ride.using my defy for work commute and boardman for best.easier going up hills and quicker down then due to the gearing.does make a difference, not a massive one but its a pleasure to ride..every one keeps going on about fitness etc..for me its not the fitness,i have been a regular cyclist for at least 10 years doing at least 11k a year.i would class myself as above average...just wanted to step up a notch which this bike has allowed.
