Well since both our father and my sister's father in law are dead, it would be hard for them to cause trouble now....

My aunt married a dreadful man, I can't stand him, he's a jumped up snob and he has a bad effect on her too (get her on her own, she's ok, but once he's around, she sort of ends up a bit like him). Luckily, they live in Canada, so I don't have to see them. Funny, they could never spare time to come over when my Gran was ill and my Mum was running herself ragged looking after her, but they managed to get over for the funeral, and to make sure nothing escaped them in the house clearance...

My mother is having big problems with her daughter in law at the moment (my brother's wife). Their first son is a year old now, but since Christmas I've been getting regular tearful phone calls from my mum because daughter in law doesn't like her to see her grandson, for reasons none of us can fathom. The four of them went out together the other day and mum, without thinking, picked little James up to show him something ... without first asking permission. Ffs, this is her grandson! She's a nice person, not one of the bloody Kray twins. Anyway, that kicked everything off and now daughter in law is having regular counselling, my brother doesn't quite know what's hit him, my dad and I are at our wits' end trying to sort everything out and my mum is talking about making a clean break from the family and going to live on her own somewhere. Me, I think daughter in law needs a good slap and a serious talking to. Bloody families.

the only issue i think i'll have with my future in laws is i don't want MIL smoking near the kids (which I don't have yet) if my parents or in laws want to pick my kids up, if i have any, then thats fine, they did an ok job of raising me and my mrs (hopefully to be) so, no worries really.

Yes, that's fair enough. I smoke, my mum smokes, even my brother (father of the young chap in question) smokes. BUT, none of us would dream of doing so anywhere near the little chap or his stuff. It's the fact that D-i-L seems to have taken it into her head to lay down some utterly unreasonable ground rules (which, incidentally, don't seem to apply to her family), so much so that the rest of us are scared to go near our newest relation in case we do something wrong. That can't be right, surely? Even allowing for her being an overprotective mother.
