Bimbling along ...
Has anyone got Black Ops for PC yet?

I'm thinking about getting it but the reviews so far seem to be pretty bad. One bloke claimed to have gone and bought a PS3 just to get better gameplay, although I don't believe that.

Can't help with the quality question but I stopped pc gaming around 3-4 years ago and now use my sons XBOX Live . Mainly on the cost of what seemed like constant upgrades to keep the latest games running at decent frame rates. I actually can believe someone buying a PS3 to play Black Ops IF the pc it was being attempted on was older kit the gameplay may not have been great. Don't know what requirements are needed though.
A PS3 bundle with Black Ops can be had for circa £260. A graphic card upgrade + more memory+processor+etc. =????
Online gaming was always the big thing for me on the PC, going back to modem-to-modem original Doom. Its something the consoles have been doing very well for awhile now (so easy with xbox live as well) so has overtaken the pc for it for me.

For me now its xbox = gaming (my gamertag is DarthDay)
netbook = cyclechat  / email
desktop = kids schoolwork (though can't see it being replaced when they eventually get thir own laptops)

It's got issues with the online play that are in the process of being patched - after the PS3 and Xbox.

Thats interesting...my son plays on Xbox live and while he loves the game, he's often fustrated by connection problems, lagging and being made host when all it does is cause him problems.

Nope. I am no longer at school and I have a social life. I have better things to do than zap imaginary Baddies with my thumbs.

You should all be playing the magnificent Goldeneye on the Wii. None of this fancy next gen graphics rubbish.

An absolute classic that would have come to the PS3 and Xbox through the arcade channels if not for the problems with the rights to the 'Game' and the 'James Bond Franchise'

The original game is owned by Nintendo. The new game is not.

The rights to the old game are owned by the developer Rare/Free radical who in turn are owned by Microsoft. However the rights to the James Bond franchise are owned by Activision. No agreement can be hammered out which is why the old Goldeneye for the N64 has never been released.
[/quote]

This is true (although Free Radical owned nothing, they were just formed by the guys who made it, but are now no more - well, they went bust then got bought by Crytek) although we are now confused between the original Goldeneye and the recently released Goldeneye game on the Wii which is something completely new. And completely excellent. Especially the sound.

Basically what I'm saying is everyone should go out and buy the new Goldeneye game for the Wii instead of playing Black Ops.

[full disclosure: I worked on it and I used to work for Free Radical. Please buy Goldeneye, I want to buy my children christmas presents and feed them]

[full disclosure 2: I have no children]

..than imply that people who play video games are still at school and have no social life.

Yep. Shoot-em-up games are for spotty teenagers and those who haven't progressed beyond that stage. And as for queuing up all night for one....

thats exactly what happened to me, guys at work had a nick name for all the constant upgrading and keeping ahead of the game, where frame rate was king

Thanks for the troll post, Mr Sophisticated. Pray, tell us what you get up to in your social life that makes you so mature?

Of course I could just say something like "bicycles are for children and those who haven't grown up enough to learn to drive", but that would be equally twattish.

Interesting OP. I've still not got it, but one of my work colleagues has said that it has been a disappointment

I have it on the PC. No one has mentioned yet that there is a fundamental difference with the PC and console version. The PC has dedicated server support for online multiplay (I personally don't buy COD games for the single player experience), unlike the console where you are at the mercy of someone else's connection in the lobby who may quite, suffer lag, be downloading a big file or WHY.

Ths means that servers have moderators/admins that can and will kick and/or ban people for misbehaving on their servers. Whether it's cheating, disobeying the particular rules on the server (no swearing, no bunny hopping etc etc), it makes for a far better game imo.

There were some initial problems (terrible lag) with the PC version of the game, but it was quickly ironed out about 3 days after the game was on sale.

For Call of Duty at least, it has to be the PC version if you don't want to hear brattish American or British kids whining and swearing

Well, since it's my birthday today and Mrs. Admin got me it as a pressy ... I can report that I've so far got mixed feelings about it.

I like the idea of all the cash / upgrades / wager matches / dedicated servers etc. but the graphics are really laggy for me. Something that's been reported all over the place and I've yet to delve into the "\cg_draw" commands to try and see what FPS I'm getting, but something I think I'll be able to sort in time.

I don't think it's a massive leap forward, and in some ways I think MW2 was a lot better, but then I need to give it a chance really as I've only had a few hours this afternoon to get to grips with it.

I'm using an overclocked Pentium, so maybe a dual/quad core upgrade might help - who knows - but I'm not about to ask Mrs. Admin if I can spend hundreds on a new PC just yet. Let's get Christmas out of the way first eh!!!?

So far, it has some promise, but I haven't been "blown away" with it either.

Cheers,
Shaun

It's better on the 360 than the PS3. They have ported it from the 360.
Firing Range is appalling on the PS3, Framerate and graphics are poor. Keeping your party together is still an issue too.
