Congrats on having the courage to do what millions of us should do.

Use the old bike for work, fitted with narrow slick tyres. Buy a track pump and pump the tyres up to their maximum pressure. Eat well and rest well and within a couple of months you'll be adding extra loops to your ride for the hell of it. Buy a good lock.

Then buy a nice road bike and keep it in your bedroom for security. Never leave it anywhere outside the house where you can't see it.

Not that it saw much use, but my car's been parked for almost a year now. Don't tell me you actually used to drive 1 1/2 miles to work

The car was there therefore I drove

...and when you do decide to take the plunge, I'd suggest something along these lines (these are all current and within about 25 miles of you):

Any of them would do you proud (and be a good ride), and you wouldn't have to worry too much about security because a) scrotes don't want bikes like these, and ;) even if it did go missing, you could probably get another one for fifty notes without trying too hard.
