I would recommend the subway , i used one for over a year before i got a road bike as a main commuter but i still keep it as a back up bike/when it looks dicey .

Only thing i changed was to put some scawble city jet slick tyres on for a bit more puncture resistance+ better handling .

Apart from normal wear (brake pads , new gear cassette + chain) i have had over 5000 miles on it with no problems.

Like a few have said it all depends on the staff at halfords for set up , my main one is not to bad but i would always take it to a local bike shop or learn to do it your self that way you learn how to do repairs if you ever need to do it on the road.

The only thing i cannot do is true wheels up to shop standard as i have not got a jig, but i can still check spoke tension for minor adjustments.

i bought a gryphon, loved it for about two rides. Then it went to crap, wheels fell apart and disc breaks caused no end of trouble, so changed wheels to bontrager race lights and put caliper brakes on, not a bad bike again but wouldn't recomend to anyone.

I know a guy has one with the basic brakes ie not disks (edit ie the v spec)and he has had it over a year with no problems i think that sounds like it was the infamous bad set up for you .

If your looking at halfords bikes and do not mind a raod bike handlebar seriously look at the carrera virtuosso it is going for £300 atm on sale and i had to be restrained from buying one with money i do not have, cracking bike you can mount gaurds, rack etc onto.

If you want a flat barred bike and dependent on distance i would recommend the subway 1 , i did 10 mile each way on mine .

My Brother has a crossfire, made by Carrera at Halfords. Hes not a hardcore commuter, but he has put a fair few leisure miles on it.

He hasnt had any problems, it looks good with no obvious corrosion, he has full mud guards and rear rack and can carry a usefull amount on it.

I would go for a subway though! Less grandad looking.
