I use Northern a lot, and agree with this wholeheartedly - excellent service with pragmatic & sensible staff. Carriage could be better (more space) but they do a great job with what they have.
Agreed, I use Northern, never had an issue, even when very busy. I've also used First transpennine, in fact I've never been thrown off a train... yet!
Here is the extract for Northern on the A to B site;
CYCLE ENTHUSIASM!
Northern is working hard to encourage people to cycle to and from its nearly 500 stations. A Cycling England grant is helping to improve station cycle parking at stations in the Leeds City region, and elsewhere Northern is working with local authorities to improve provision. At the front of Leeds Station a 'Cycle Point' (Dutch style bike park, hire,repair and shop) is due to open in 2010. Northern have developed a Cycle Strategy in consultation with cyclists and others and several times a year the Cycle Users Forum meets bringing together cyclists representatives, the rail company, local authorities and other bodies. There are no bike bans on services and staff are encouraged to be helpful, though there may not be enough space to fit bikes on peak hour trains. Folded bikes are not restricted.
Makes be proud to live where I do.
