Also, some station staff are way better than others. Best I've ever met - Berwick Upon Tweed. I once had a porter stop what he was doing and come over to tell me which end of the platform I needed to be, while I was still walking over the footbridge to the platform. He did this because he knew it was going to be the other end to normal and thought I should know. Other times they've cheerfully allowed me to board trains earlier than the one reserved, and are generally nothing but happy and helpful.

On the other hand, at a station which I won't name, but the Doc knows only too well, I've encountered downright grumpiness that I dared to be wanting to know which end I should stand at, and given the impression that they felt it was my fault the train was arriving late - that's late for me to get onto, so I dunno how I'd managed that...;)

Good advice this, I'm taking my MTB on the train to Pitlochry Friday to join my Munro-bagging climbing pal for a trip over Mount Keen.

Took bikes on three trains this weekend. First was a Transpennine Express - they're normally very good but it was so busy that people with suitcases took up the bike spaces for a while. All sorted in the end though. Our reserved seats were nowhere near the bikes though.

Then 2 x Northern trains. They take two bikes per train and had allocated space. You can't book them on though...we were just lucky.

Kennyc, I think you are Glasgow based. If so, you are blessed with one of the better train operating companies. My bike travels daily between Edinburgh and Glasgow - peak times and with no problems, no booking - just jump on and load your bike. The staff are occasionally a bit arsey if they think that 4 bikes in a carriage is too much, but most times they just ignore it.
