I remember reading (it may even have been in Velovision)of a bike by a company called Renn (?)

It was a metal "likeabike" but with a small stub under the frame. When skills allowed you bolted on a fitting with bottom bracket and pedals, attached a chain and poewered the same bike.

Effectively extends the life, and introduces pedalling on a trusted machine.

Edited...

I also believe that one of the better specced children's bikes is by "Puky" who have reasonable weight frames and scaled brakes tc instead of simply fitting adult ones.

I bought my son a 'Hudora Joey' from Evans. It was fun riding home with it on the rack of my bike:

It's £48 from Evans. It's lasted very well, and both Gabriel and I appreciated the motorbikey styling of it. He has a Puky bike with pedals now that we were lucky enough to get via Freecycle.

Hills can be a problem with these things - even if you could find one with a brake at 2 I'm not sure the child would have enough strength to awareness to use it properly. I have tied a leash to Gabey's one before just to make sure he didn't escape me down the hill...

Yup, that was in VV, I'll have a re-read of the review. I expect it'll be on the pricier side - although if it lasts longer....

Yes, Puky are good, we had them on roadshows. One was red, the other grey, guess which one was more popular?;)
