Would like to know if there are any other bikers out there that have got their wheel stuck in Heaton Park Tram Tracks?

:welcome:

I got my front wheel in a tram track here (Blackpool).  Threw up loads of oily mud and scared the living daylights out of me, managed to keep it upright while I unclipped and pushed myself out of it.

I think this problem with tram tracks is simply unfamiliarity.

When I was young tram tracks were commonplace in most big towns and barely raised a comment.

I cross over the Tram tracks in Croydon every day on my commute, at one place at an acute angle. I keep waiting for the day when I'm a bit tired and dopey, don't concentrate enough on things, and then come a cropper.

I came off In Blackpool, front wheel slipped into the tram tracks as i was crossing them in heavy rain... went flying grazes but otherwise OK, tram staff that witnessed it were unhelpful to say the least seeing as it must have looked bad (read spectacular) comment was should not be on track mate....

That was my problem, a mile before the end of my first (and so far only) 30 miler, tired and starting to knock a bit, its easily done.

I live very close to tram tracks in another city. It's easily done. Beware rain particularly.

Chillyuk, do you think they were easier to deal with\see etc due to considerably less traffic sharing people's road space?

I know that trying to spot when the tracks around here veer off is quite difficult through the car in front, subsequently quite awkward to traverse.

The tram tracks in Nottingham are pretty slippery in the rain. There have been a few cyclists who have come off going over them during the last few years.

I think the best thing to do is just slow down if you know that you need to cross them. And then make sure you avoid crossing them at a shallow angle. Though I'll admit that can be difficult sometimes if you need to follow the tram tracks or they branch off at some point.

I remember my younger brother coming off on some tram rails on the quayside in Newcastle before it all got ponced up. He came down with a hell of a bang, poor kid was really hurt.

+1 on that! Mine was when I was cyling home after the Manchester to Blackpool, so I was something like 75 miles in and there was a downpour. This was also the first time i'd been out on the road bike in the wet. In my case though, a taxi driver did ask if I was ok. I'm still a bit scared of riding the road bike in the wet lol.

Nearly came off the bike crossing the tracks in Heaton Park. Went over them at too shallow an angle front wheel was fine but the back seemed to catch on the rail and nearly highsided me. Don't know how but i managed to stay rubber side down.
