Hi,

First post, so be nice... ...and I hope this is the right sub-forum for this question...

I've currently got my bikes stored in my garage but it's only small and I want to clear some space. I'm thinking of putting a small canopy/plastic roof over the passage down the side of my house and storing the bikes under there (it's got a locked gate, so no security problem).

The roof should keep them dry but any opinions on whether this is OK to do, in terms of potential corrosion? Is it likely to be much worse than being in the garage?

They're not expensive bikes but I don't want them to rust to pieces...

You will find that corrosion will occur because damp air can flow through. I keep an old folding bike at work, in a covered multi storey car park and noticed some rust spots on the bell, over a couple of months, otherwise it looked ok.

every steel part on it rusted up within 6months its not ideal for a road bike imo .

The enemy of unprotected metal outdoors is sudden changes in temperature and humidity. If the metal is cold and warm damp air flows around it, condensation will appear on the metal leading to rust. This will happen even more quickly if you ride your bike in winter, wet or dry, because every surface will be dusted with a light layer of road salt, which attracts moisture and is then even more corrosive.
