Chains wear about (rule of thumb) a quarter the rate of a chainring (NB double/compact).

Really? My chains seem to wear out fastest.

I've never heard of anyone who had to replace their chainring(s) four times as often as their chain.

clearly a mis type from Ajax. I think he means chain rings wear 1/4 rate of cassette / freewheel (or possibly chain)

its all "on average" anyway, apart from regularly checking a chain for wear/length and replacing, the other stuff you change when there is an issue.
