I would say it depends on the bike. Im 6ft and I ride a 56 for my scott but my focus is a 58.

There are seven measurements to get a decently fitting bike.
"Just under 6 foot" is not good enough to get a sensible answer.

I'm 6ft but my Roubaix is a 54.

Not sure if it's the relaxed geometry, or the fact I have a longer body and shorter legs than some of my 6ft mates, but it fits me just fine.

My Sirrus is a 54 too.

Could be the design of Spesh frames; on the other hand, it could just be that the LBS had too many 54 frames, saw me coming, and palmed a couple of them off onto your truely. ;)

Best bet - go to your LBS and try a few.

I think this is why Sheldon indicates top tube, or effective top tube, as being the most crucial measurement. Modern seatposts give you all sorts of options, as do bars and stems. The problem with getting a frame with a top tube too small/large is that you may not be able to get the correct fore/aft position for the saddle. However, given stem and bar options, the frame would have to be two sizes out before this began to be an issue.
