A tip on location - try to find a flash, expensive bike tied up with a cr4p lock - and lock yours up near that.

If your leaving the bike unattended all day then get a solid lock in the £20-30 range preferably one that your insurance endorses. Dont spend much more as like above posters mentioned a proper bike thief will get it if they really want it.

It's more to deter the casual thief/scrotes.

What sort of alarm?

The present one came from ebay, and has lasted 8 months. I can't see any of the same design there, but this is similar.

The lock I have on my shed could be put round the seatpost as a bike alarm.

And also from CPC, but I haven't tried one is this alarm.

They nominally go down in sound level, but any of them will be physically painful at close range, to anyone with normal hearing. They will also attract attention, which no thief wants.

Nothing will stop a determined thief, but at least locks and alarms can deter them.

A friend of mine went back to her bike last Saturday, found her wheels, tyres and chain cut through with bolt cutters. The D lock through the seat tube, wheel, and bike parking stand was well scratched but had survived. B*****ds. Insurers (house policy) are paying up though.

...so no room for a jack. Add a cable if you're concerned for your wheels, tho' I suspect that wheel thieves are actually pretty rare. Not so easy to fence down the pub.

That illustration shows the lock going through the rear wheel and nothing else so your cycle could still be stolen by any scrote who's got enough nous to cut through the rear wheel and not the lock (OK they won't cycle home but they can still sling it in the back of a van)
