Hi all

I have a number of good locks for home and when I cycle to work. My question is more about when out on a training ride. On a number of occasions I have either stopped at the local shop for a re-fuel or been taken short and needed to use the amenities (ahem!).

I don't tend to take me d-locks out when training as too heavy so what is a good secure lock I can use ? Ideally one that fits in the back of my jersey or should I stick to the d-locks !

I live in a low crime area however rather not be left without my pride and joy

Thanks in advance

i was thinking about this, i often pop into shops. i wondered about getting a thin cable lock with an alarm attached? so you could just lock it up quick but is some little scrote did try and pinch it you could collar him while he was still in shock?

Last time I was in the Edinburgh Bike Coop they had a retractable/alarmed/wire lock that would do the job - it attached to your frame(I think). Not for long term security - just a nip in the shop or something. ;)

link; see below - £7.99, 1200mm long.

No mention of alarm though, although I think they may have omitted it by mistake. It does appear to have something inside the retractor and it suggests returning it to the shop for electrical recycling????

This might sound quite strange, but on my commute, regular cycling I bring essentials and intentionally plan so that I dont have to go into any shops, plus it would take ages to remove all the accessories that could be taken,as in my neck of the woods they would take the eye out of your head  so no bike lock would suffice.Saying that when out in better areas or touring, just popping to the shops etc im sure there are plenty of suitable ones.

I am toying with these:

Yale
Medium Alarmed Lock (YCL1/12/ALARM)
- can be used to secure bikes and other valuable equipment
- 100db alarm will sound if attempts are made to cut through cable or break the lock
- Locks with a key (2 supplied)
- Suitable for indoor or outdoor use
- length 1500mm
- thickness 12mm
- batteries required - (2 x AAA)

Trouble is I want to see one in the flesh before buying

I'd be put off by
One-touch design enables speedy locking without key
and the risk that I would lock it and then realize I didn't have the key

I have one of the locks Centre Parcs give away for quick stops.

Cheers, wasn't too sure - maybe got it mixed up with something else(you know what it's like when you troll the net ).

I've got the armoured cable Revolution permanently on my bike for such stops. It coils up nice and small and has a good bracket - not retractable or light though.
