Kryptonite new york, or the orange one below it, forgot the name. 1 D lock through frame and rear wheel, kryptonite cable through frame and front wheel. All ive ever used and touch wood...never failed.

The main thing to look for is the sold secure rating, ideally get gold. Bearing in mind most insurers require that as a condition.

I like my Abus Granit 54 and Abus Cobra cable for the wheels, the Abus version of the Kryptonite stuff mentioned above. It's just as important you lock it up well as have a decent lock, ie. not locking it by just the wheel or not locking it to a weak wooden fence. Nothing will stop a professional thief though, you just have to minimise your chances. :smile:

Depends where and when you are wanting to use it.

  1. Are you going to carry it about when on your bike?
  2. Is it for use in a garage or shed?
  3. Will you be leaving it attached to railings?
  4. What's your budget?
  5. Does it need to be an insurance approved lock?
If you are using it for locking up your bike while at work you could buy a heavy duty one and just leave the lock attached to the railings, therefore you don't need to carry it about.

It'll be locked up at Uni then in my house for the rest of the time! By budget is £200-£300 for a bike is it worth insuring? Budget of around £40-£50 for the lock but cheaper if possible!

Abus Granit X - around £60-70, Gold sold secure

Cheaper = less good

Plus insurance (on home contents, but depends on the excess)

Might be worth insuring, is the bike essential to you? If it was stolen would you be stuck for transport and unable to replace it? Value wise I wouldnt personally bother if you have a good lock and lock it correctly, but it depends what the bike means to you, you can get insurance very cheaply and it can give you that peace of mind.

Kryptonite NY Mini - At the end of the day, if you want good security, you have to pay for it. No point getting a cheap lock.

If you get your bike insured, CycleGuard are best. They'll recommend the Kryptonite lock too as part of the insurance policy.
