A friend had his bike nicked last week, and it reminds me I have never checked to see if my bikes are on my house policy.

I will be phoning the company in the morning, but what do I need to check?

I'm thinking a) are the bikes covered when in my shed? b) if not can I add them on c) are they covered for theft when I am out and about, and for accident damage? d) public liability?

Can anyone think of anything else? Or, shoudl I be insuring these outside of my home insurancce, if so where?

Thanks

From previous threads HCI seems to be the cheapest option. Make sure you state the value of the bike though.

Separate insurance seems to have so many get out clauses that it does not seem to be worth it IMHO.

I can say from recent experience (last week) mine was covered under 'Personal belongings outside the home' which covers in my case, up to a £1,000 of belongings. My bike, however, was only covered up to £500 (with a £75 excess). This includes any attachments you may have on the bike, and it has to have been secured to a fixed stand, railing etc. If your bike is worth a lot more it would definitely be worth getting separate insurance for it.

If you keep your road bike(s) in the shed or garage, do what i do and make sure they're bolted down to a concreted in ground anchor with a decent - say motorcycle - chain.

Then lean a cheap mountain bike unlocked on top of the locked road bike(s). Most scrotes want MTBs anyway, and if they're in the shed or garage they're gonna walk away with something aren't they, so might as well give 'em an easy steal and hopefully they'll not be bothered with the more expensive road bikes.

And sorry, to answer the question, Home Contents is much the better option. M&S insure individual items upto £4k.
