My house contents are insured with Frizzells/Liverpool Victoria and I had assumed that my bike was covered for theft as long as it was locked in the garage. (Under the section "thefts from outbuildings.") I rang them this morning to see about extending the cover for when it was away from the home and was informed that the bike wasn't covered at all - for anything. That was a bit of a shock.

Anyway she offered to quote for full theft cover on the bike at home or away from the home as long as it was secured to an 'immovable object' (which, funnily enough, includes my car when it's on the roof rack) and the quote was... £0.00p. So the good news is that it's now covered, there's no extra cost and I can use whatever lock I like.

Might be worth a phonecall your insurance company if you haven't done so.

Perhaps you should check that you get 3rd party risks and legal assistance cover as well. If not join CTC!

Thanks for reminding me - my bike has been uninsured for 5 days now!

Still struggling to find anyone who'll insure my bike, considering it's a custom job and I live in a shared house.

Strange cause we are also with Liverpool Victoria and my bikes are covered while at home but when I was doing the quote online I tried with bike protection away from home and the premium would have been about £100 extra.....

Will give them a call to check that out again

+1 thanks for the reminder

Just spoke to my insurer (morethan) and the bikes were covered already while in the shed as long as it was locked, and since no bike is valued at more than £1500 they don't need to be individually declared. £14 extra got me cover away from the home. Thanks to al-fresco there I checked on the bike rack thing and it was the same; it counted as an immoveable object so would be covered as long as the bike was locked to it. I can also use any type of lock.

Got in touch with Direct Line today - they seem much less finickity than the other insurers I spoke to and were very clear about what they would cover and under what conditions. They were happy to insure both my bikes and didn't care about one being a custom build, and the quote was quite fair. AND my flatmate's stuff will be insured too!

Just need to check a couple of things with my landlord - I have no idea what type of locks my doors are ("are they five lever mortis deadlocks?" "five litre what?") and whether there are any locations someone could climb up to reach a window, but providing they check out it appears I've found my next insurer.

Jezston - Have you tried E&L?

Wasn't familiar with them, just going to get a quote ...

... four times what Direct Line quoted. Oh well!

I have both my bikes insured with More Than under my existing home contents cover, for a combined value of approx £3k. They are aware that they are kept in the garage but they stated that they did not need to be locked to anything in there as long as the garage itself was kept locked, and obviously there had to be evidence of forced entry in the event of a claim. They just took a note of the frame numbers and make/model etc.

There was no additional charge to the policy for adding them on.
