Early 60's sounds about right. No expert on Carlton but @Spokesmann should be able to give you more info.

Assuming all is original, that would play this machine in the mid-late 50s, old CC badge is a giveaway. The Benelux MK7 mech places it here too. Check the rear LHS stay for a frame number and prefix letter. Id need to look at some old catalogues as to point to the correct model - of which there were many at this time, first impression looks Flyer-esque. Get some more piccies up!

Thanks all. I'll look for the frame number. It's at my dad's house so will drop by in a week or more. A few more pics attached I've got at the moment
BTW Unless someone tells me it's worth a pretty penny I'm simply looking for a welcome enthusiastic home for it to restore it as I won't be doing it 😂 though I did do an amateur job on it around 1996 hence the terrible paint job and Cinelli bar tape. Was rideable back then.

@Jfk262 - I'm in Dewsbury, so between the two. Happy to give it a home and do the restoration, depending upon how much you'd like for the Carlton.
Basically, each winter I restore bikes to keep me sane due to the day job. I've got a Raleigh to do which was mis-sold as a Guerciotti but no others so far.

Finally got over to have another look
I can confirm the seat post and steerer tube are both movable
See attached photo of dropout. Looks like D6917 which I think places it at 1955-56

Sounds like a good plan. If you give me a fair offer (just show me another example of bike & price) for comparison it sounds like a deal 🙂

I've picked this up from Jfk262 as a project, and then we realised we knew each other already!
The lugs, which aren't in the collection of photos above, are below. Now trying to work out what this was before he re-painted it:
The lugs don't match anything from the Carlton site here - http://carltoncycles.uk/carlton-lugs/ - although appear Nervex-y so I'll have to keep looking although the Carlton 1956 brochure does appear to agree with Jfk262 above that it's a Franco-Italia from 1956 due to the bike having Benelux derailleurs and GB Coureur brakes (albeit only a rear currently).
Plans? Clean-up, source the front brake and then a probable strip and re-paint for now. It'll be a few months though ...

Virtual cake to @midlife as they look to be Oscar Egg Super Champion lugs - now I've got to identify which Carlton from 1955/1956 they were on with those components, and what colour it was originally to get an idea of paint needed ...
A light clean and lube this afternoon has freed up the front changer and some stiff chain links. And the almost-new but very cracked tyres still hold air ... just.

OK, a very slow progress update. The Carlton has been dismantled but the bars were seized into the forks so I left the frameset soaking for a loooong time and then used the university workshop to free them up.
The frameset's then been off to be painted. They've not got an exact match but it'll do - imperfections are the frame, not the painter:
Now to source decals, etc. although I'm still not sure exactly which Carlton it is from 1956 - maybe it doesn't matter anyway as it's not original matched paint. I've also got to remove the paint from a lot of the components and clean those up before putting the whole lot back together again.
One thing: it is incredibly lightweight for an almost 70 year-old frameset. But far too big for me so once it's built up it'll be on it's way, unless the seller would like it back.
