Things have moved on in some respects, Spring Bank now has lots of (east european) immigrants. The street is all antique shops and Polish supermarkets. Newland Ave has become the 'cafe culture' area. Ahem.

Bransholme was once the largest council estate in north europe. Which to me would have been a better location for the Tesco....somewhere I would avoid, Helen, purely on the strength of the escalator announcements if they didn't sell the cheap lights.

That's irrelevant, unless you're only interested in looks. Which you are complaining about Halfords being, while at the same time showing that you yourself are only interested in the looks.

well no, because the reason it looks wrong is 'cos it IS wrong.

Before i understood about wheelbuilding from sheldon brown's website it wouldn't have looked wrong. But to look at it now, it's clear they've just gone for bling value, and to hell with engineering principles.
