hi thx for all ur fast replies, just to answer a few questions ,gear train is campag,as for mileage probably done about 3000 miles now and i already had the bottom bracket replaced after 6 months by the dealer(free of charge i might add),
cost wise for replacement pricing goes as follows front chain ring FSA £53.00 rear 10 speed cog £50 new chain £23.00 and £24.00 labour charge hence £150, as for maintaining it just the usually dry and wet lubes on chain rings and cogs,Has for the raleigh sun doing 40000 miles on the same transmission,i did replace the chain once because it snapped on me but as for the rest of the gear set up it remained untouched, and lasted the distance untill someone decided to nick the bike(god knows why it looked a wreck) AS for newer bikes having lighter chains and gear mechs and would you really want to go back to the old days,i think for the weight saving of a pound at the most, its a very costly buisness and the only advantage of the newer bikes i like are the actuall gear shifters and extra gears![]()
Cost wise, you're not being particually ripped off Kittyfin...
I assume thats both chainrings for £53, they're usually around £25 each (thats for a different make mind)
£50 for the cassette...is it Veloce or above ?, its not far off LBS prices anyway.
£23 for a chains about right....
DIYing it can save you some money, but only on the labour.
Older bikes did (and do) last forever, everythings made of steel, chainrings, cassette, it lasts so much longer, but weighs a ton (as said by previous poster), Everythings alloy now, light but wears so much quicker. I guess thats why we covet and care for them so much
