Am having a 2 hour bike fit today at a local cycle shop. This will be my first one on a road bike and im looking forward to seeing what changes are made and then what difference they make.

Anyone else have any experiences of bike fits ?

Yep! me and it was worth the money, after 40 years of cycling I thought I had it right and I was proven wrong. I have found so far the only people who say it is a waste of money or you can do it yourself are the people who have never had one.

I have had one before though not for 2 hours. It did help and it was on a Hybrid that i was going to do lots of cycling on abroad. I am glad i did it. I will be interested to see what they do in 2 hours bearing in mind bikes are pretty simple things. I know at some point im lying down and being measured  and having my flexibility checked which will be very interesting !! Its £120 worth which was a birthday present so fingers crossed its well spent.

I've had one on the road bike, and just had the follow up 2 months later, found it very useful, lots of changes to the bike and now riding further / quicker than before.

Definitely worth-while.

Well i can thoroughly recommend Gary at Wildside Cycles in Tunbridge Wells. He spent some time out in Holland in the early 90's riding with the Dutch teams trying to be a pro so he has some good experience. A lot of time was spent with me on my bike on the turbo trainer with Gary taking multiple measurements as i cycled.

Thanks to him I can now clip in and out smoothly due to a slight alteration on the pedals that I didn't know could be done. I had almost given up with not being able to get them out which annoyed me as i really can notice the difference that cycling with cleats makes. The cleats have also been screwed in at a slight angle to help position my foot at a better angle which then obviously helps position your knees and legs correctly to get a fluid movement.

My saddle height went from 612 to 655 and was moved back .That's a huge difference that i would never have believed would be done. I am 5'4 and to look at my bike you would think i was at least 5'9 with the height of the saddle stem. I must have looked dreadful before. This has really helped my climbing.

I have got high arches and now have some different insoles to stop my numb toes.

My handle bars have been rotated slightly towards me to allow me to have a better hold on the hoods and so therefore the brakes and gears and so that i can use the drops as it was too uncomfortable before.

On paper it doesn't sound much but I have picked up lots of tips, I don't have numb toes now, I have now climbed the 4 hills near me 2 of which have always defeated me and my back no longer hurts.

I know the price, £120 quid, ( a birthday present) is a bit steep but i think its been well worth it.

Glad it was worth while...always wondered whether it would be worth it but it seems like it's much improved your riding experience...will have to wait for the next birthday though (or maybe even two at £120!) before it try

You could always try the online sites that show you how to fit your bike. Won't be as good as having a pro do it, but it will be close enough until you can afford it.

Any suggestions for online guides for self fitting?

If you have got a decent bike shop near you they should give you pointers of what to look for, angles etc. Whilst i was on the turbo trainer a lot of the measurements were done which i obviously couldn't have done myself so you may need a mate to help.Good staff in a bike shop are worth their weight in gold. There are also different prices for different levels of fit too. Mine was the full monty but i could have had an hour fit for £70. Other shops will do it for cheaper too and it is worth shopping around and asking what you get for it, you may be surprised.

Last time I bought a bike it was from Evans, their professional advice was "yeah the saddle looks about right!" and off I popped. Just bought from Ribble so will work it out myself for the time being.

edit: Just checked the price of Chevin cycles, the basic fit is £120
