I'm relatively new to road cycling. After fitting my clipless peddles I started to get pain in my left leg up to my gulte. It was very annoying and would last best part of a week. Today I went to Cycle Zone ad had a bike fit, it cost £45.00 but so far I'm very happy. I should reserve judgement but I just got back from a great ride.

I'm really lovin my bike right now. On my way home from my ride I spotted a couple of riders going out towards Henley. I decided to see if I could catch them for a while. Riding in a group was a real buzz even if it was only until they headed for a hill and I decided to let them go in case they were slowing down for me.

I may have to fit my new Gatorskins and go back out tomorrow. I wish there were more groups of riders for me to chase in Reading.

No fancy camera/software. It was adjustment based on visual inspection and plum line. Seat height, seat position, handle bars height/position. Most importantly he spent at least 15 minutes on the position of my cleats. Cycle Zone in Crowthorne out wokingham way towards the M3 (from Reading) http://www.cyclezoneuk.com/contact/

I think that's all you need from a bike fit at " our " level . I'm guessing a proper bike fit involves a lot of questions about how things feel ? When you ride less than 800 miles a month I don't think I would know how to answer those questions . Getting things put correctly and then tweaking them as you ride , maybe get it checked again after the tweaks ?
I think I would be scared to move anything if I had paid hundreds of £ for a bike fit even if I didn't like the set up after a few rides .
That's just my opinion .
As for riding with people , if youre going the same speed or have caught them up most people are happy to ride with you for a bit . Don't be shy but don't be too chatty either . If I get stuck , catch up with a group but like the speed I normally just say " mind if I tag along "
Females normally say " I told you to go away " but blokes are alright

No, nothing to do with it.

The problem is when you come across some people who are going at almost the same speed but clearly don't want company: do you slow down and let them get away and then sit on the instinct to catch up or do you knacker yourself overtaking only to find that they are ace on hills and stuck behind you?

Just ride your bike and stop worrying.

I thought an expensive bike fit was to set the bike up for " you " if they dont ask how you feel with the set up how can they know they have got it right for " you " ?

Because you've gone there for them to set the bike up, not for them to set it up on your "feel".

If that is the case then it is quite clear to me that an expensive bike fit is not worth the money .

No actually.

If someone asks you how do you "feel" whilst riding a bike, there will be a large spectrum of "fit" that you "feel" comfortable.

Somewhere within that spectrum is the correct fit for what you want or what you want to avoid.

So, there's not really much point asking you how you feel.

I had one done by Pedal Precision and it was money very well spent. It was one year ago and 7000 miles later I have not had any single issues with aches, pains or injury. I also believe I am in a more efficient riding position too.

7000 miles a year equates to around 15-16 days riding the bike each year. I have 3 contact points with the bike and I rate it as very important the bike is set up right.
