Another option for towing a trailer is to fit bars and cycle carriers to the top of the trailer. We have a Noval Portaflot, which is quite a substantial trailer. We have side extensions making it higher, then top bars and have carried 4 bikes on top with thule carriers.

Save yourself money and time by just folding the seats and lying the bike flat in the back. If the car is big enough you can leave the wheels on. Inside the car the bike is hidden from view, safe, dry and away from possible damage and road salt in winter. Two bikes can be separated by an old blanket.
