Looking into buying my first bike in a very long time

and would like to know what people thoughts would be on the matter.

The main reason for having the bike is to get fit and loose weight so i have been looking into the hybrid type of road bike, something that is comfortable but will allow me to get about quick and hopefully loose weight as i do it

Not sure on a budget as i dont need a pro bike but i do need something that will last an be good enough for a few years or until i want something more specific

So what do you guys suggest ??

cheers

I'm in the exact same boat as you bud, just new to the forum too... my best advice.... dont buy one from a car boot sale lol....

heres a link to my thread with the ordeal i had today;

https://www.cyclechat.net/

Maybe check gumtree, seems to have some pretty good local deals depending on your area/transport options... just make sure to be prepared + know what your looking for in a 2nd hander + any common issues...

just my 2 cents, I'm sure other members will be much more help!

, will be checking the normal routes too though, ebay, gumtree etc just to see what there is.

I want a road bike but need the flat bars just for now anyway, maybe even moving to full road spec later as i get fitter and my stomach does not get in the way

You sound very much like me.
This is the one I was advised to get, and so far so good:

Have been to my local shop and had a look at a few bikes to get sizing right etc, seen a few very nice ones as well but the price was a little more than i wanted to spend

, although if i loose the weight and get fit i would love to get one

Will be going to my local evans and a few others just to check out my options, was even looking at the road bikes wondering if i should bite the bullet and actually get one rather than a hybrid and then upgrade
wacko.gif
, i wonder if my size will effect the riding of it

hi tony and welcome,
like you i took up cycling to get fit and loose weight, and its done that even though ive still a few pounds to go, i started with hybrid but everyone kept going on about road bike and i took the plunge best thing i ever did absolutely love it and wouldnt go back now, budget wise youre looking at around 600 for entry level make wise consider giant, trek, cannondale, specialized, scott bianchi to name a few hope that helps, and stick at it you will reap the benefits.

Hi - I was just like you and many others and bought a bike to lose weight and get fitter. You've got to force yourself to do it but just by being on this forum will help a lot with the ammount of great advice you get. Hope it works for you. For me, I bought an entry level road bike to check I was 'up to the challange' - then if you find you are - invest a bit more in order to achieve your goal. Good luck dude! Go for it.

Do you find the road bike ok even when your out of shape ??? I was concerned with constant kneeing in the stomach

It might be worth considering where you will ride. I'm still petrified of traffic, so I took my hybrid along the canal path at the weekend.

Ouch - I wish I had full sus
