Secret Lemonade Drinker
Can't someone start a thread that doesn't involve my neck of the woods. I thought I had East Yorks to myself!

Sadly Nellies has gone down hill a bit, but there again its a Sams Smiths policy, no music, no singing, no games etc, no doing anything but just quiet drinking, its cheap enough but the beers a bit rough on the tastebuds especcialy if you've had a drink elsewhere before. Last year we had been to a funeral and having a drink afterwards, most of the relatives were Welsh and broke out into a quite song in one of the back rooms, the landlady went scatty over it, shouting and bawling at them to stop singing, so we left. And beside's they shut at 2300, under new management now so it might have changed, which to me is a few miles short of a bike ride, give me 0200 in the morning or later. If I'm out I'm in the Rose and Crown or The Standard.

If I did not have commitments for other rides out over the weekend I would have joined you for a ride out on the wolds or even Soltydog for a run out to York on Sunday, but I never know where I'm going half the time with the lads on a Saturday or Sunday morning or even if they are going to turn up, its more a case of follow the leader, put the hammer down and go, try not to fall behind or you get dropped not knowing where to go, as I think the routes made up as you go.

Its why I like the bigger pubs, like the "Crown" but I am working on my weight, only just under two stone to loose.

Soltydog, not sure what route you will take on Sunday to York, but if you plan on following the cycle route 66, be aware that there is road works on the length around Kipplingcotes to Goodmanham and they have closed the road half way along it.

Yesterday they was just digging a bit up and it was passable, this morning the road was closed as they was relaying the tarmac and there was no warning till I got to the railway bridge that it was closed, and no way was I going to back track or pedal up that hill to the A1079. Instead I did a bit of cyclo cross country and carried my bike round the roadworks for about 100yds.

Maybe by close of play today (Friday) the road works might have finished but watch out for large cobbles, chipping, and ramps where they have dug it up as it is a bit rough going.

Thanks for the tip off. I guess there's always the option of hopping onto the Hudson Way for a bit if it's shut but that can be very muddy and overgrown.

If you see the signs that the road is closed, just disregard them and carry on. All there will be would be a lorry, a tarmac layer, a road roller and two or three vans and the verge's are quite wide enough to walk round and in some of the place's you can actually leave the road and cycle round them on the short (mowed) grass like I did today.

In reality though come Sunday I think it will be clear of roadworks. Depending on our pub(club)run tomorrow I may even be that way again so I can do an update.

I have found a new route that I love to bits, 4 times I have done it this week, which involves going up Nunburnholme Hill but traversing it from South West to North East instead of the usual North West to South East, the gradient is slightly less but once you get to the top its virtually downhill all the way back to Beverley via Middleton.

.

That's a shame, especially on such an occasion. Just checked out the Nellies website, and I quote:

'This website and domain name is privately owned by a regular customer - which is maybe as well, because it is the current policy of the Samuel Smiths Old Brewery, not to permit any pub to have their own website ;)'

You must do a route map thingy & share it, but can you invent a version where it's all down hill? :becool:

Here's a screen grab from Garmin connect. That big lump in the middle is Nunburnholme hill and the smaller bumps before it is the gradual climb from Molescroft to Market weighton and onto Nunburnholme. After Nunburnholme its pretty much downhill all the way home.

32 miles in total and 1 hour 56 minutes riding time

Just done the stretch, Kipplingcotes to Market Weighton, the roads open but be aware that there is still areas that have been scraped and tarmac not been relaid. Road seems to have been swept in the areas concerned so all the big stones, and chippings are now no longer a problem.

Was that you I saw this morning Soltydog just in front of me at Molescroft at the roundabout, about 0948, just going onto the cycletrack heading towards Cherry Burton, wearing a red and white top, I was about 100yds behind, blue top and going left towards Beverley.
