Hi
I have a Boardman road race, and have been cycling now for 8months.as I am going further/getting faster, I am finding the brakes on it pretty useless. It may just be me, and that I am at 95 kilos close to the bikes weight limit, but stopping seems to take forever. I can be pumping both levers downhill and the bike simply will not come to a stop

Is it that the brakes aren't very good? (tekra538)
My weight/momentum just takes a long time to stop?

Are they set / adjusted correctly?

Might be worth going to the LBS and getting them set up.

I am over 90KG and even my sora brakes stop me with no problems.

Hi mate. The braking system is OK its just the pads are a complete joke. I've nearly killed my self with them & in the wet they just don't want to stop you.
I changed pads to Clark's 6.99 from CRC. Bought 2 sets. Now braking is amazing with one finger. Cheap easy fix.

talking of brakes and pads... has anybody used the cartridge type pads such as these:

there seems to a variety if varieties available.. it is easy enough to get replacement pads of the right type... any to recommend or avoid???

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Yes the stock pads on boardmans are cack , on descents i bottle out well before anyone else as the brakes do not give me confidence so i must get round to changing mine.

I was thinking the same yesterday so will need to get mine changed before winter.

Some of the decents yesterday I was struggling to stop for junctions even when not peddling
I know the feeling, the compound is better suited to go in a land fill than to stop you. Everything else on the race is spot on, just change pads & fit clip less pedals add some racing slicks & you're good to go on classics/sportives.

Apart from dodgy brake blocks, the other usual suspect is greasy rims.

I nearly met my maker on a 20% descent near here which emerged at right angles directly onto a busy A-road!

It turned out that the blocks were fine, but my wheel rims had got covered in oily crap during 2 or 3 wet rides. I scrubbed the rims with detergent when I got home and full braking power was restored.
