Best way by Road Bike in Glasgow from the East

I'm off on Monday so I thinking of heading to Billy Bilslands at the Saltmarket near Glasgow Green. I know a few of our forumers come from Glasgow and some even commute Edinburgh to Glasgow ;) What is the best way to that area of the city by Roadbike. First impression I could go mainly via back roads from Edinburgh - Kirkliston - Torphichen - Avonbridge - Slamannan - Glenmavis - Coatbridge - Easterhouse (too late to organise an armed escort) - Parkhead to the Green.

I can invent have a "need" to go to Billy B's as well and would be pleased to slow you down accompany you on this venture on Monday, if you don't mind going a bit lot slower

IIRC, the PfS route into Glasgow goes through Airdrie - would it be an idea to do a 'reverse PfS' from Avonbridge ?

Where's a Weegie when you need one ??? ;)

Sorry I can't offer you a lift, as Mrs Scoosh and experiment are coming out to play too, so we'll be 3 bikes on the back !

No Problem; I'm still to decide to squeeze the bike in the back of my little Starlet or to take the inconvenient train to Stirling (Engineering Works) and cycle back to Dunfermline, its mostly downhill except for the uphill

See ya tomorrow, the weather is supposed to be better

Scoosh, I know you were interested in the Kinesis TK, I now have mine built and using it on a daily basis. If you want to have a look and a spin - happy for you to give it a go. It is a 57 cm in the deep red colour.

Perhaps not relevant if you're coming from the East but i cycled into Glasgow from the North last week and was surprised by how simple it was. I went via Stirling, Fintry, Lennoxtown ( a descent of the Crow Rd - fabulous!), Torrance, Balmore, Lambhill, Possilpark (no probs!), Port Dundas, George Square. I was amazed how little of the city there was on this route. I retraced my steps on the way back to Lennoxtown the headed to Kilsyth to tackle the "Tak Me Doon" for the first time - It was hard! Very hard.

I done that route from Dunfermline a couple of months but turned left at the bottom of the Crow Road towards Kilsyth and the Tak ma Doon road staying well clear of Glasgow, its good to know you can get in that way too :welcome:

Maybe, if the weather is nice, I might just tag along for the ride. As my bike has developed a worrying rattle, maybe it is time to get a new bike... :becool:

Crow Road and Tak ma doon are my local bumps!

Tak ma doon is hard hill, I'd love to know what some of the gradients are on that as there are a few killer corners.

I wouldn't say it is harder than Crow Road, it's just a different type of climb and hurts in different ways!:smile:

I really need to organise a informal ride on one of my routes for those who are keen to tackle a few hills. I've done this once, who be up for a group ride of this some time?

According to the gps it hits 17.5%

I'd say it is:smile:

The Crow Rd is a nice gradual gradient. Tak Me Doon is up and doon like a yoyo and really sucks the strength out of you. Every time you think it's going to end it goes up again.

I'd be up for that route sometime.

It's funny, as I find the downs a nice break from the ups and the constant climb of Crow Road is harder for me, and I hate the turn next to the car park! ;)

It's all psychological of course!

I'm worried now, as I just saw you did over 100 miles on Saturday!

However, weather depending I'm planning on going out for a run next Saturday morning (I like getting away early about 8:30am ish). If you or anyone else are up for it it would be great to have a cycling partner. I'm thinking of going in for an 80 mile sportive in August so I need to get some miles in.

I can't make next weekend Magnatom, as i've got the Radar Ride sportive next Sunday which is the reason i've been getting the miles in.

It is so much better having a cycling buddy on these long training rides than going solo.

I'd agree with you that it is at the car park turn where the Crow Rd is hardest but once you're past the worst it it feels like you are going downhill instead of uphill - as you still are, of course.

It's much easier in reverse and so.......ooo fast. Make sure the brakes are working!
