Is a helmet really the best thing to scrimp on? You should be able to pick up a new one for 20 quid or so online from the usual sources, wiggle, ribble, chainreactioncycles etc. I'd rather go topless than wear an uncomfortable, sweaty, or second hand and possibly damaged bin on my bonce.

Obviously second hand but would you want something thats been sitting on someone else's dandruff ridden bonce for goodness knows how long, not to mention the safety aspect. No, go for a new one from one of the many on line shops like CRC. I bought a Giro recently and its very good.

The best - though not necessarily the cheapest place - to get a helmet is your local bike shop. As Zakalwe has said, you really need to make sure that a helmet fits you properly before buying, and different brands, and models within brands, are all shaped and sized differently.

A decent LBS will help you pick the right helmet for you, and won't be much more expensive than an online retailer.

Evans usually have a reasonable range and if that is closer than your LBS which may actually not have a very good selection, or may have depending on what they are like, then go to Evans and try them on. Don't settle for something which is not comfortable. I don't know how amenable Halfords are to you trying helmets on, I don't tend to go to Halfords for anything other than windscreen wipers (for car!)

The windscreen wipers Halfords sold me didn't even fit my car  so I wouldn't count on them getting a helmet right.

Second hand helmets are simply a foolish idea.

If you have decided that you are going to wear a helmet to protect yourself....... why buy one that could be rendered ineffective by previous damage?

Unless you know absolutely that the helmet has not been dropped, bashed, involved in an accident then buying second hand invalidates the very reasons for buying
