I started using runkeeper this week but it's not great to be honest. Can anyone recommend a good cycling app that will track elevation, route and avg speed. Can't afford a Garmin or anything like that for a while. Thanks.

Great, just downloading Strava now. It says its free but you can upgrade to a premium service. Is there a good reason to upgrade and pay?

Thanks for your replies.

I use Endomondo. You can export your files and upload them to Strava using their websites. Not sure if you can export from Strava to Endomondo, so might be worth investigating before you plump for Strava.

On Endomondo click on workouts, you'll see an 'export' box on the right of the screen, click that and export the file as a .gfx file.

On Strava click the orange 'Upload Activity' button on the top right, choose 'upload a file on your computer' and navigate to the .gfx file you just saved.

You need to do this for each workout.

I'm surprised you don't dig Cyclemeter - it's stat-laden and very reliable. Better still you can export to Strava from it. I love using Strava for the medals but wouldn't use it to pore over stats.

Another Cyclemeter user here; can be made more accurate with the additional Wahoo Fitness Cadence and Speed Meter and the addition of the Heart Rate monitor (and you'll either need the plug-in ANT+ receiver or the iPhone holder with integrated receiver )

Can't recommend anything other than Strava - it's got everything you want for free and if you want more pay monthly it's great .

So what exact equipment do you need for all this? I'm kinda intrigued by the heart rate / cadence thing but as nothing more than a (hopefully not temporary) obsessive recreational rider I don't think I could justify the cost if it's loads!
