I have some sets of old Cateye lights - the sort of slightly elongated hexagonal looking ones. I don't know where they came from. I can't recall buying them. I regard them so lightly that I often leave them on my bike when it's locked up in town. Yet they always work and have never been nicked. I often have them on flash as a second set with a brighter light on steady. I suppose these would be the modern day equivalent.

All you guys talking about torches etc. those require mounting brackets which for me make them a no-no as I don't want 5 sets of brackets! Thus are inappropriate for me. So we're back to CR2032 powered batteries from Planet-X & how to they fair?

How about Planet X: they're selling their Phaart lights (don't laugh!) at half price. The Aeon 3 Watt front light's a clone of the Smart Lunar 35, just as good and a steal at a fiver. There's also a clone of the Smart Superflash for £2.50. The dual 0.5 W rear light's also quite good, not quite so good quality but then it's only £2.50 as well.
It also looks identical to the Cateye front light that cost me forty quid a few years ago!

For what it's worth...

I have one of those £1.50 Phart Bone LED's mounted on my seat tube. I position it so it shines against the heel reflector on my shoes. It's insanely effective.

I endorse the Phaart lights in general. Also huge love for the Aldi own brand light set (£8 I think for a front and back), especially the front. I find it better than the Dark Star linked above.

Also have a couple of Knogs, I find they seem to attract road grime and the lenses are often obscured after a couple of dirty rides. No issues with the light itself though in good conditions.

I've just bought 2 Raleigh rear lights from Evans at £4 a pop. They look identical to the Aldi ones. The only gripe with the aldi ones are the mounts are a bit flimsy.

Aldi front light isn't quite as good as the Edinburgh cycles one I linked in an earlier post, but not that different to worry about. Mount is a bit bobbins on the aldi one too.

Agreed on the mount. It's required a sliver of inner tube to keep it in place. I find the batteries last longer in there than in the Edinburgh light though.

Lights are just insanely cheap nowadays though. I remember that they were so expensive even 2 years ago. They were an investment. Now you can have 2 or 3 bikes lit up with secondary lights for so little cash. My Hope is the only thing that moves between bikes.

You can get really cheap lights but some are insanely expensive. Im like a rabbit in headlights:eek: with so many choices. As in the thread, i dont fancy messing about or (fettling) with a cheapo ebay xml just to get it working properly. Im after a decent light that i can use on unlit A roads and pitch black country lanes, just a cheapo light like the phaart mentioned above for a back up/streetlight roads. All lights must be removed easily and im not bothered if i have multiple atatchments on handlebars as i only commute at night (nightshift).
