Hi

Can anyone recommend a good book (or whatever) on bike maintenance for a complete novice?

I have found these online - any recommendations?

Simple Bicycle Repair: Fixing Your Bike Made Easy by Rob Van Der Plas

The Bike Book by Fred Milson

The Haynes Bicycle Book: The Haynes Repair Manual for Maintaining and Repairing Your Bike (Haynes Automotive Repair Manual Series) by Bob Henderson and John Stevenson

Complete Bike Book by Chris Boardman and Chris Sidwells

Road Bike Maintenance by Guy Andrews

Bike Repair and Maintenance for Dummies by Dennis Bailey

You could go to the local library and ask them to search what bike maintenance books they have available across the County and reserve the lot. Or, you could see if you can do it yourself on their website if you prefer: not sure if they all do it, our local ones do. Our libraries charge 25p per item reserved and send you an email when the books arrive at your preferred branch for collection.

Read them all and see if any tempt you to buy them.

Or move to an area with a died in the wool socialist local council and get it all for free! (The Council Tax will be eye-watering but hey, you can't have everything.)

Ah, we are both true and blue down here. The Libraries are expected to make a profit.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Always end up going back to the ParkTool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair (make sure you get the second edition), or go to their website http://www.parktool.com/repair/index.asp (updated to cover newly introduced components) and print out the relevant pages, then insert in a looseleaf binder, and make your own big blue book.......
