I had an older (30 y.o.) aluminium handlebar that got bent - will never know how. When I replaced it I tried to bend the old one back - couldn't do it, and I'm no weakling. Modern bars may be made of thinner wall tubing though.

That's what I was thinking. My mate said 'it must've been some crash if you bent the bars'. But it wasn't. The bike just basically fell on it's side from a standing position. I'm starting to think I just moved the brake hood and misdiagnosed it in my tired confusion (I'd done 50 miles and 4800ft of climbing at this point).

You can't bend them back by hand so would doubt they were bent like you say. If they are bent do replace.

Yeah, I don't think I bent them after all. Yet another confusing time-wasting thread from me in the tech section!
