Since the theme of the thread has been lost to having crashes, perhaps then, when you have your first high speed crash is the defining point of not being a beginner anymore, and can proudly say "I've done it all, you wanna see my scars"

"Road rash".

I have fallen off twice, coincidentally once going uphill (very early days, poor gear selection) and once going down hill on a rough track when I think I was being too cautious and I swear I went over the front, but it was all a blur. I do recall hubby calling out "don't fall off" as he sailed away down the hill and round the corner.

That's a good definition - beginners fall off due to excessive caution (a.k.a. a handful of front brake); experienced riders fall off due to a lack of caution!

You cease being a beginner when you decide a Flouro jacket makes you look like a beginner.

Cyclists are much like butterflies.

They start off as lumbering bright green things pushing their fronts forward and heaving hard to get their rears to catch up.
They eat loads to prepare for the tough road ahead.

Then they fall into a state of indecision, go quiet for a while and then….

all of a sudden, they emerge in the bright colours of their club jersey to flit away at speed with apparent ease.

You probably cease to be a beginner when you offer your first bit of advice on here.

I guess being a strict fair weather cyclist makes me a beginner??!!

No, no, that just makes you a wimp....

Not at all. You could rack up years and miles of riding, just riding in nice weather.

I think there's always some aspect in which you are a beginner. I don't like descending fast on two wheels (now, on the trike, that's a different matter). I always need to check I'm doing the right thing before I buy any component for my bikes - although I can assemble most stuff ok. I've been cycling for 10 years now, and it's been my living in some respects, but there's always more to learn.

Descending fast curves, you may become a two wheeler
