On the road to nowhere
Evening,

I appreciate everyone starts cycling at different levels of fitness but I'm wondering what would be a respectable 10mile time?

I done a 10mile stint in 46 mins which included 3 major roundabouts. Had it not of been for the ridiculous ascend into my village and only 14 gears to choose from (compared to my trusty old MTB) I could have probably shaved more time off that but I'm very happy with my first ride.

9.5 miles in 29 mins. Add another couple of mins for the other .5 miles

Anything less than 20 minutes is going well.

In reality evens or 20mph when trying hard is a reasonable target if not wanting to race.

10 miles in 20 minutes = 30 mph.

I'm glad I don't go on your club runs if that's just "going well"

10 miles in 46 mins is 13mph which, given you say it was uphill, seems not bad to me. But I am 61 and a bit on the fat side

It's all down to how you feel yourself, there is no "set time" for doing 10 miles unless you are doing Time Trials - if you're new to cycling 46 minutes is great, next time go out and try to either increase your distance or beat your time over the same course - don't worry what anyone else does, there's always someone faster! Most of all enjoy it

Holycrap I'm miles off. I'm going to check miCoach because that works out at only 12-13mph but everytime I checked I was at 22-23 mph
No you're not - a 20 minute 10 miles is in the realms of top professional athletes - http://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/Competition/CompetitionRecords/Men/tabid/210/Default.aspx I suspect none of those times were set on a hilly course.

When I was younger I used to commute into Manchester in the summer - a touch over five miles. I used to ride every inch of it as hard as I could on the way home. That was was a flat route and not once did I average over 20mph ( i.e. it always took over 15 mins) overall because to do so where there is traffic and traffic lights and pedestrians and junctions is very, very difficult. I nearly did it on a few occasions - but not quite.

That was also on an 1991 531 frame, incidentally. Wish I still had that.

Anyway, your time is fine - not blisteringly fast nor desperately slow. And it's a benchmark. Keep riding, and if it interests you, see how much better you can get. Strava will give you an idea of how others ride near you, if you have a device to run it on.

I would not worry about the time, unless you plan on racing?

I usually do 10 miles in about the same time, i know Im slow but I just cant seem to go any faster, I did 30 miles on saturday and it took my 2 hours 15. I feel like a slowcoach when I see all the fellow cyclist wizz past me!

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to concentrate on getting out 3 times a week and I now know this is a canny little 10m.

The one thing I'm not keen on though is the state of the roads on the outskirts of Newcastle. I'm not saying they're worse than anywhere else but as a motorist I didn't know they were that bad.

Its the same all over, one of the things a lot of motorist forget/dont know we have to contended with. I avg 15mph over nearly 30 miles today, every time I looked I was doing 18+ you dont tend to look at the slower speeds.

Don't worry about doing ten miles as fast as possible. When I started I was completely new to road cycling and hadn't been on a bike in around 5 years. Now yes I am 22 but I smoked and drank heavily for those 5 years and befor come to think of it. Going by stats I have increased my avarage speed by around 4 mph and enjoying every ride. Wind rain snow you name it if there is time in the day I am riding. I still have along way to go and if I'm hosnest I don't plan to race but for what ever reason beating my own times and speeds is so addictive.
Today I was very pleased 20 miles with 2125 feet gain. In 1hour 10. :hyper: Get strava app downloaded on the phone if you havnt already. And have fun. I've got two mates on road bikes now and they both say the best money they have ever spent. Riding with mates may be alittle slower because of all the blathering but I always do my fitness rides on my own anyway

Have fun bud :bicycle::bicycle::bicycle:
