Done 'The Beast' a couple of times and, visiting the website for 'The Beauty', it's looking like a really cool event to do. Obviously the reputation of 'The Beast' is a positive; with well over a hundred riders already signed-up - a brilliant early endorsement for a brand new event. Love the jersey design and the proposed route; which doesn't look over demanding and should be a great attraction.

Looking forward to this one, doing it with the girls and we love the shirts too. So nice to be able to see as i didn't see a thing on the Beast! See you there.

Yeh!!! This could be a great one for Pinky, and the girls. And, the lads who ride - and who are currently in the majority of entrants - can leave their testosterone at home for once and have a no-stress ride.

Marcus does put on lovely events, that's for sure.

Not sure if I'm going to be able to make this - it's a bit close to the other half's birthday, so we might already have plans. I'll certainly be along on this if I get a pass though!

I think an entry would be a Lovely Birthday present, I wish my other half would do it with me but no such luck!

Looks like fun to loads of others too Rebecca; entry list is already showing over 130 names. That's a dozen more than 24 hours ago and I've seen nothing yet, in the printed cycling media, advertising the event. With 80 days to go this could end up being huge.

Yes, it does look like fun and I'd like to do it.

However, I'm not impressed with the answers I got to the queries I sent via the website's query form. For one, the "Human Resources and Security Contract Administrator" who replied to my query about getting to the event from London by train recommended getting a bus from Taunton. Does she not 'get' that I'm travelling with a bike? Or are buses in the West Country so very different from those in the South East?

I will reply to her e-mail asking for clarification but need to get the sarcasm out of my system before I do... Likewise with how to respond to what she said about the timing chips...
Simply no sign of real life common sense!

Hi Rebecca
i got an email from Emma re your questions, sorry but there are no trains to Minehead which is mad I know but they just dont go there.

Can i offer you a pick up by one of our team? Let me know when you are planning on getting to Taunton and I will get you picked up by a safety wagon as long as its the day before or it's not too late in the morning, you are making the effort to enter so we should help as much as possible, let me know via Emma whom emailed you. Hope that helps.

Good question re Helmets and Timing chips though. We have always said we prefer everyone to wear helmets because it safe, but they are not compulsory. As part of that the best way to wear our timing chips is on the helmet so thats what i think the mix up was with emma's email to you. It wont stick to the head, cloth hat and ones that have been put on bikes haven't always stayed on without glue that is.

Hope that helps, and let me know re the lift, our pleasure if we can, tell more people of the event its shaping up to be a big one!!

Marcus, thank you. (I've only just seen your reply.)

My thought was to - would you believe it - cycle from Taunton rail station to wherever I'm staying near-ish the route. Really really appreciate the offer of a lift though, subject, of course, to timings. (My preference, if I can make it happen, is to arrive 2 days before the event.)

As for the helmet question - there may have been a slight misunderstanding due to my asking "are helmets required?", rather than (as I meant) "are helmets compulsory?" I wasn't thinking of chip-mounting issues when I asked. Frankly, I was braced for a "our insurers require it - no helmet, no ride" response. As it is - I note your "helmets recommended" policy and the logistical problems with how/where to mount the timing chip - fair enough. I haven't tried it yet but I'd have thought it should be possible to affix the chip to any flat smooth surface in the right location to be caught by the reader, for example, to a badge pinned to a cap/buff/headband. Of course, the size of the badge might be relevant - any guidance on that? Do you think this would work?

I'll let you/Emma know by e-mail if I decide to take you up on the lift offer.

Thanks again.

... actually, just noticed the website says "At registration you will be receive a high-tech timing sticker and your entry number which is to be placed in front of your handlebars (cable ties will be provided)."

So helmet/headgear may not even be relevant?
