Hi all.
I was just replacing my rear cassette and I noticed that when it was off I could see right into the bearings. I don't remember this from previous occasions (though to be fair, there haven't been many) -- is this normal? Or is a part missing? There looks to be a good deal of greasy dirt in there, but I don't want to start regreasing if I can't put it back together properly.

(Also, the axle wiggles slightly -- how
much is too much here?)

Thanks!

Oops you're missing the cone. There should be a cone which inserts into that cup.

Thanks! Are you sure -- sorry I realise now that my pic doesn't show as much of the line of the axle shaft as it could. Could it have come off with the cassette? I.don't see how,, in which case has it been missing ever since the last service? Eek!

Whoever serviced your bike did not replace the metal cone. or.. it somehow broke, split apart and fell off (Unlikely)

The cone is there. However, the metal labyrinth seal (sometimes erroneously called a dust cap) is missing. I also notice that your chain graunched some spokes on that hub. Those spokes seem to have sharp edges and will break sooner rather than later.

It probably came off with the cassette. It's not a big deal. Put it back together and it will be fine.

That seal's (note it is a seal, not a cone) hole is far smaller than the stack of washers, spacers and nuts on top of it so it is impossible to come off with the cassette.

Better picture here. So it's the seal? It's a pretty basic wheel, any chance it simply didn't come with one? I take it I *could* just reassemble, but I presume I wouldn't be doing the bearing much good.

I wanted to get my bike shipshape for L2B... good job I started in plenty of time!

Labyrinth seal, I learn something new every day . I would have called it a dust seal / cap.

Its definitely missing though!

How much does the wheel 'wiggle' because from your second picture there seems to be quite a gap between cone and bearing?
Comparing your photo to the image below I would say your missing a dust cap, which you local bike shop should available in box of old spares.

Thanks a million, guys. The reason I've bombarded you with questions (sorry!) is that I'm dithering over whether to attempt the job myself and learn something, but on balance I think I'll take it down the LBS.

It's not a massive job, if you go to the LBS, they will sort it, but then you won't get the experience, or the satisfaction of doing it yourself :okay:.
