I can feel a little movement in my bottom bracket about 2 or 3mm . Not just feel it moving off the bike but can feel it thru the pedals as well . Its shimano sora components. How much would folks say is too much movement. It's on from new just over 2 years . Would it be cheaper to buy tools and fix myself or go to bike shop . I'm pretty clued in on fixing stuff myself . Many thanks

Anything more than barely perceptible movement is too much in a BB (or a headset for that matter). If it's a conventional threaded BB, just remove the crankset and dismantle the thing and find out what is causing all the movement. You might get away with just regreasing and reassembling it, if the bearings haven't disintegrated. If it's some junk press-fit design, most common in carbon frames, then sorting it out might be a bit more of a problem.

Make sure it is the BB you’re getting the movement through. It’s all too easy to mistake BB play for a loose NDS crank. If it is that, and it does part company with the spindle, make sure you put it back on opposed, rather than in line, because that would be realllllly stupid ( allegedly )

Bottom bracket tools are usually very modest in price, unless you buy Park tools.
Its always cheaper if you have the skills to do it yourself.

Bottom brackets should have virtually no free play.

what bike, year and groupset?

Ok so just got the chance now to look at the stuff I got from chian reaction.
My original bb shows its bc1.37x24 and bbrs500 .
Now I was given a bottom bracket
sm bbr60 and told this was the one I needed by a mechanic at the store . Its marked bc1.37x24.
Google says it's for 105 and ultrega and when looking on there website bbrs500 shows up as tiagra bottom bracket.
Bikes in the shed so will look at it 2moro

BBR60 is the best one for the job - don't worry that the numbers don't exactly match.

Changing the bottom bracket is quite easy - especially if you've watched a couple of videos on You Tube. I think the most important part of installing an HT2 bottom bracket is how much pre-load you put on the bearings through the plastic 'screw' type thing on non drive side.

Some people say do them up finger tight with the tool, but in my experience this wrecks the bearings in no time. I always go for as little preload as you can get away with - with the crank firmly seated by a few light taps on the right hand side, literally tighten until there is the very slightest resistance, then a further 1/16 of a turn or so before tightening the two allen bolts.

As long as there is no play in the bottom bracket, there is enough preload imo.
