The question I'm always left with on threads like this is, 'Why can't they face BBs and headtubes at the frame factory or after spraying, and use that fact as a selling point?'

Some manufacturers do and some don't. Surley for example, do face the BB shells of their bikes but many others do not.
I'm not a Luddite but I do think these external bearings are a bad idea given that they are vulnerable to wet and salt etc. I've faced a few now but still find the job a PIA.

I agree. My Kettwiesel has them and they needed replacing at 4500 miles. The build of the trike is such that the BB gets absolutely no spray and, as I have a faring fitted no rain reaches it either. The only 'safer' environment would be on a static bike in a gym! The theory is good but in practice the execution of the Shimano external BB is poor.

the reason they want the bike/frame is they want to check the facing. i'd send it if i were you. unless you want your lbs to do the job and happy to pay.

YOu're right Zigzag, the thread is not exactly flush and there is an unhealthy amount overhanging according to the LBS. Will have to send it back.
