BB gone in less than 500 miles.

On my new Ribble I have a SRAM GXP BB and the blighter has gone already. I can't help thinking it's down to the fact that this affi' I met my ife in the opticians, left it outside and it took a tumble. I'd been for a 40 miler today and hadn't noticed anything amiss so it's difficult to say whether it was there before or not. The LBS whom I trust, said it's pretty unlikely it was a fall and Ribble agreed.

RIbble have told me to send the whole bike back, which I'm not going to do, to assess why this has happened. Meanwhile I have to fork out for a new one + labour and wait for Ribble to come back and tell me it was a dud. But, what could have caused this so early on if not a fall? Too high a gear, too much pushing as opposed spinning?

IF external and not faced properly 500 miles is about it. I only got 4500miles from a properly faced Shimano HollowtechII on my Kettwiesel.

that's my reading of it as well, even with a brand new bike I'd still get the BB shell faced and the BB reinstalled properly.

the reason they want the bike/frame is they want to check the facing. i'd send it if i were you. unless you want your lbs to do the job and happy to pay.

Okay, thanks for that, people. But this does leave me with another conundrum. The problem for me is this; if I send it back to Ribble I'll have to wait for a bike box and then wrap the bugger myself which I've never been good at doing, then wait for however long it takes to get back to me from them. I've got the bike set up just how I want it too. When I spoke to Ribble they did not mention the facing but they did say if they found the cups faulty they would reimburse the cost of a new one and labour up to £20. This leads me to take the LBS route but...

...how much will it cost for the LBS to check the facing?

What exactly has happened to the BB and in what way is it broken.?

Okay, there is play in the wrong direction. The crank and indeed the whole mech moves if you grab the end of the crank and twiddle - 2-3mm I'd say. The LBS confirmed it was the BB. I'm thinking of perhaps investing in something better but would still like to know, as a a result of others helpful suggestions, whether facing a BB is a) going to be expensive and b) within the ability range of most at a reasonably good LBS. (I'd honestly prefer it not go to this one although they've been relatively good in the past, but would prefer not to ride it if possible to the other).

That's external. While they have a reputation for not lasting long even when set up correctly, 500 miles sounds like a facing issue. I have two trikes, one with similar external bearings and one with internal bearings. The former is on its second bearing after around 4500 on the first. The internal bearings are 6200miles old and still OK.

I must admit I only have the one bike with external and that's an essential to work with the mini EBB. When I'm looking at chainsets I find myself put off by the external ones. You read things about how they're more user friendly, etc, but I can't say I find cartridge and square taper hard to deal with.

It does seem things are being shuffled towards external though.

The question I'm always left with on threads like this is, 'Why can't they face BBs and headtubes at the frame factory or after spraying, and use that fact as a selling point?'

The same thing happened to one of my mates on his new Wilier which had a Miche BB. It developed play in the BB in about 700 miles. The LBS sorted it out (don't know what they did) and he reckons it has been fine since then.
