As an underlayer, I wear a cheapo T shirt. There were some at Tesco a couple of years ago, and I'm still using them.
Over, I have an Altura full zip, long sleeve, fleece with two rear pockets. In fact, I bought another cus the first was so good.
This kit is for sortes in less than 8 Deg C. Above 8, I wear a S/S normal everyday road jersey.

To make the decision on long pants, it is a three way equation of 1/ Ambient temperature, 2/ Wind speed and 3/ Duration of the ride.
Why so technical? The thin layer of skin on the Tibia can easily suffer frostbite.

And as for Aston Villa football shirts, I was given one once, so I use it to clean the garage floor.
