Base layer

This is my first winter riding in "proper" gear; just done my first ride with base layer under bibs - not doing it that way again, only 15M but just starting to chafe a bit down below by the end! Missed my chamois next to the sensitive bits!!

Base layer on top only! Chamois and bibs should be next to skin except up top where a base layer can be worn. IMO.

I've been wearing Castelli Sorpasso this winter and they are a real treat comfort wise. Warm, comfortable and feel like a second skin.

Well then its not a base layer.....its just a second layer, but I agree its over the chamois layer.

Most people class the base layer as being a jersey type and not leggings. I never wear extra leggings but i do wear base layer jerseys under my bibs

If it is cold, I wear a short sleeve merino baselayer next to the skin and under the bib tights straps, then a thin long sleeve baselayer over the straps and then other layers as I see fit.

is it just me but I get so hot in base layers

+1 for base layer under bib straps, easier for toilet emergencies, also prevents any issues with bib straps itching or chafing next to skin when you get sweaty. No brainer.
