I have bar ends on my hybrid and wouldn't be without them. Particularly useful when climbing, and in areas with no side roads etc. Just pick your spot to use them. I wouldn't use them whilst approaching junctions or when filtering.

Spend a couple of extra quid and get some ergonomically designed ones, much more comfy!

pah, ultimate comfort get:-

then a set of these to go round the curved part:-

followed by a pair of these for the flat open part:-

the ergo style grips can be trimmed to allow your controls to fit if need be.

Angle the bars to high at front, lower at rear, open flat section to the rear and, I preferred the 'rise' going downwards as it gave a better angle for my wrists on the sides. My only reason for changing from these, after thousands of miles, was that I rode so much on the sides that having to move for the controls became an irritation. So I switched to drop bars but if I'd been able to get the controls on the sides of the butterfly bars, and I did try, then I'd still be using them.

There's a good reason these sort of bars have been used by round the world cyclists.
