Thats great thanks everyone I did contemplate fitting the shifters as mounted on the down tube (circular clamp ,shifter each side of the frame) to the end of the bars but then thought how easy would it be to operate ? I may still have a try when I get the bull horns. I find shifting with the narrow bars a little difficult as one I'm not used to it and two I don't have much leverage to hold the bike straight with one hand on the battered bumpy roads on my commute. Just the wider bars may help with this. the bike has quite a steep fork angle so is quite twitchy.

Yep, I seem to remember £39.99 for mine, I'd used them 'friction' but then 'acquired' another frame so bought wheels that would accept an 8 speed Dura-ace cassette from the same groupset and used the indexing (with a redundant click on the shifter) a bit later I changed the wheels and asked about a similar cassette (so I could keep the others intact as a spare set) That's when I found out that a standard Shimano 8 has (almost) the same spacing.

Not only that but the new wheel/cassette is actually bang on for indexing too so I can just swap the wheels over (I'd expected to need to re-index when swapping them) however this is purely by luck.
