Ball of foot aching??

I've had similar problems with any pedal I've tried, then I tried Speedplay Zero's and they've been spot on

I also use SPD's but only on my fixed gear, but as it only does relatively short distances I have no issues with those either.

As others have said though, cleat position, shoe width and general sizing can all have a big effect too.

I have been using SPDs for 3 years and Yesterday I got SPD-SL, because I seem to have developed hot spots on longer rides, of late. Ideal test ride tomorrow night with the new shoe / pedal combo, just the 165 miles

I am booked in at boneshakers on 31st July for a 3 hour fitting as I am sure lots needs tweaking as I get dead hands after 10-15 minutes I love riding and as a novice don't want either injuries or putting off due to discomfort
This is the reason I took the plunge and booked the fitting compared to cost of bike etc the cost of fitting is minimal to ensure I enjoy my new found passion
Will report back after fitting
