If the shoes are too narrow then footbeds are not going to solve it and may make it worse (the increase of thickness of inner sole).

Let me guess Tyres23, you've got Shimano shoes? Shimano shoes generally are too narrow. Always get a size up from normal if not two sizes up.

I get this on my right foot (right foot being slightly bigger) after about 45 miles in my Shimano shoes (RT81). I realised that after loosening the straps to the fullest extent, that the narrowness of the shoe is the issue. I don't get this issue at all with my Specialized shoes. Possibly being leather they have 'molded' to the shape my feet. I thought this may happen to the Shimano's but realised that they are synthetic uppers.

Edit: If your shoes are marginally too small then you may get away with just loosening them.

I am going for a computerised fitting at end of month and all this is part of the setup cost so hopefully we will see!! I have giro shoes ordered specialised but not available in my size when I wanted them tried loosening etc just made foot feel like it was rubbing inside my shoe

Cool. Let us know how you get on with it and what they got to say.

I had a similar problem. But numbness down the outside edge of my foot. People suggested moving the cleats around and after a few weeks tinkering with position think I finally have it sorted.

On long Audaxes, I've been getting hot foot (pain under the ball of the foot) when my feet warm up. Since for distances of <300km, there's no problem, I don't think it's width of the shoe, cleats etc., and I have custom footbeds already in Specialized shoes, so have taken the simple option of removing the symptoms by slathering said foot with ibuprofen gel. Works wonders and cools the feet too

I've done over 2000 miles on mine and the colour finish is beginning to show slight wear at the heel and the ball of the foot, that's all.

I had this problem on my long ride today, by the end the discomfort in my foot was really quite bad. It has made me think about switching to SPD pedals with the surrounding platform, a520s.
