At the foot of the pump column there's a small knob, which sometimes comes undone and lets air out when you pump. Is yours done up tight?

Yep, pump is ok. I had three inner tubes, all with punctures!

well that is just foolish - you should have checked that before posting grrrrrrrrrrrr....... ofcourse I had assumed the tubes and spares were new, not holed.

Foolish eh! Well you are correct in assuming that my spare tubes were new, do you really think I would try to fit holed tubes and then wonder why they wouldn't inflate? That's why my post is titled Baffled. Admittedly they were old tubes, but had not been used before, so I also assumed they would be ok.
